The Pathway: Follow the Road to Health and Happiness
Published in Hardcover by Regan Books (21 January, 2003)
Author: Laurel Mellin
Average review score:

If you're looking for greater health and happiness...
I've been using the method described in this book for several years in my own life and with my clients. What a difference it has made! I know of no other technique that so simply and profoundly helps people balance emotions, change unhealthy patterns of thinking and beliefs, and curb unwanted behaviors like stress eating, shopping or drinking. I strongly recommend that you try this book and this method if you're looking for tools and support to make changes in your life.

This is the very BEST gift you could ever give yourself!
The concepts of learning the skills of self-nurture (which is becoming aware of your feelings and needs in each moment and then allowing your feelings to point you to what you really need versus what you may want) and the skill of limit setting (knowing what is reasonable and unreasonable to expect.)

Practicing these two skills sets a foundation for amazing growth and attainment of skills that naturally lead to integration, balance, sanctuary, intimacy, vibrancy and spirituality.

This program that the book so nicely outlines takes about 18-24months given the time and practice you are able to give it.

What I love about Laurel Mellon is that she not only has written a book that needed to be written, but she also has put together a program to help those who have read the book attain the skills for themselves. So often I have read books about weight loss or personal growth, but find that the author cannot help anymore once the book is out. You either "get it" or you don't. Ms. Mellon is much more responsive to her audience.

The support she offers comes in the form of kits. Each kit covers about 3months worth of work. There a 6 kits. I am currently in kit2 and am committed to doing all 6 of these kits.

There is additional support in the form of a web community that is covered in the cost of each kit.

I am impressed with the level of committment by this author to her work and to helping others reach a solution in their lives.

This program works.

Life-Changing Information and TOOLS
I read Laurel Mellin's previous book on The Solution that was primarily focused on the goal of lifetime weight loss. To say that the book intrigued me is an understatement! The earlier book addresses the central tenets of The Pathway, the pair of foundational skills that many of us miss as children: nurturing and limits.

I highly recommend both books to anyone who needs to learn and to integrate these essential skills into daily life. The history of this program and the Shapedown program for obese children at the University of San Fransisco Medical School is a long and successful one. Those who are faced with drives to excess in eating, working, spending, drinking, perfectionism, etc., should find the books more than helpful: they can be lifechanging. I also recommend The Solution program including Kits 1-5 which contain workbooks and audio programs coupled with online and other sources of support for those who want more of life's sweetest rewards. The scientifically derived statistics regarding the long-term success of those who complete the program are exceptional.

The Alley of Wishes

Average review score:

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
THE ALLEY OF WISHES is one of the finest pieces of literature I have had the pleasure of reading in a long time. The creativity of the author's beautiful words captured my attention from the first page. The characters are well defined and endearing.

This is a heartwarming tale of Beck; a disillusioned, broken man. Three years of fighting on the front lines during WWI have left this American with little hope. Cerise is a victim of abuse, which has left her spirits wounded. They find each other in war torn Paris. Can their love heal old scars? Will the adversity that has plagued each of them make them stronger?

The writing style of Ms Johnson made this story both believable and touching. The reader is transported to another era with ease. I felt the deep emotions of the characters. The angst and triumphs were written with an almost poetic beauty. The bombs exploding in Paris were real and frightening. This is a must read for people that want a glimpse into the horrors of war while experiencing the wonder and power of love.

This is an outstanding book and I give it my highest recommendation. I am sure that I will read this one again. It has all of the qualities of a classic novel that should be handed down from generation to generation and read over and over again.

No sketch here, an outstanding oil painting of words...
Johnson showcases her talent of painting a story with words in her second book, "The Alley of Wishes."
First book, "The Grass Dance" gave readers a glimpse at the God given, hard working woman developed gifts this author possesses with her poetic sense while writing prose, but her first was non-fiction and her second is not only a novel, it is a book that could very well become one of those classics read time and again through the years by countless readers hungry for oil paintings crafted with words.
Main character Beck Sanow and the person he loves more than humanly possible at times, Cerise, seem to be the victims of post traumatic syndrome warwise and domestic violencewise.
Johnson strokes out her oil painting of words with such fluidity and vibrance the reader may at times feel as if they are awash in colour...(the author's spelling of the word "color").
At one point in the story artist Sanow is asked if he sketches before painting and he says he never does. So too, it is believeable that author Johnson doesn't sketch, either. The words come together into an oil painting masterpiece and the reader is able to feast on every word upon well written word until literally spent.
The deepest lifelong "love" as well as friendship "love" are brilliantly captured on this canvas of a novel.
To be able to take such heartwrenching human conditions such as tragedy, horrific abominations inflicted on another, and soul testing physical conditions endured into a beautifully rendered story that stays with the reader is a testament to the author's awesome ability as a writer.
I will never again take a bath without thinking of the sensual nature of this book.
I will never again wonder how much domestic violence affects people.
And I will never again take lightly the horrors of war and what serving your country does to those who are trained to do whatever they have to do to win the war.Outstanding!

Midwest Book Reviewer - more than a romance novel
If you think this is simply a romance, guess again.

Beck Sanow is a young American struggling to live with memories of what he saw and did along the Front in World War One. Beck went into the war an educated, idealistic, optimistic young man, and deserted three and a half years later shattered and empty. Strong French cigarettes and whiskey are the only comforts he allows himself.

Cerise L'oiseau is a bistro singer, not all that pretty or appealing. But her sorrowful voice penetrates Beck's mind and tears at his heart. Cerise has been systematically battered by a cruel, demented fiance. She feels this dysfunctional relationship must surely be due to shortcomings on her part. She lives on an obscure Parisian side street - The Alley of Wishes.

Beck is inexperienced where women are concerned. He struggles with desire and sexual obsession for this woman he secretly names "the songbird". She sees a core of purity in Beck and soon becomes his angel of hope in a hauntingly dark life.

The beauty of this story is how they complement each other, fight each other's demons and persevere no matter what befalls them. Quiet courage and devotion is their hallmark, unconditional love is the key that frees them from dishonor and near death. It's a hopeful, love filled story, more than a romance.

Personal Reminiscence - A Key Element in Healing Grief
This anthology of pet memorials by Laurel Hunt provides a wonderful way for those who have lost their animal companions to heal through identifying with others' stories, memories and poems. When our pets die, we can feel so alone and even ashamed with the pain our deep feelings about losing a pet has engendered. Laurel's wonderful book provides a medium for the bereaved pet owner to spend quiet contemplative moments and ease their sense of aloneness in the company of these heartfelt reflections. The selections can be read in any order suiting the reader's interest peaked by the various titles or pictures. I find it particularly interesting that several of the memorials are from the late 1800's to 1920's. This speaks to me of the oral traditions of the past, where important stories are passed from one generation to the next. In our fast-paced, youth-oriented culture, these memorials of old invite us to take the time with our feelings of sadness and commune with wisdom across the ages about how to heal a grieving heart. I highly recommend this book and have included it in my own Pet Loss Resource Booklet which accompanies my award-winning audiobook on pet loss.

A powerful collection of love and tears.
This is a surprisingly powerful book. The author has carefully selected the best stories and poems written in the last 100 years about the loss of a pet, and coupled them with museum-quality vintage photographs. Expecting this to be just another attractive anthology, this veteran pet bereavement counselor was suddenly drawn back into a vivid personal re-experiencing of all those emotions encountered during bereavement for his own beloved pet. Of course, not all the selections are wonderful, but the overall effect of the book is overwhelming. Don't expect to be able to read it in one sitting. The tears and memories flooding back will prevent that, regardless of how long it has been since one's own loss. It is probably too powerful for most newly bereaved pet lovers - but very much worth owning and reading later, when some reasonable closure has been reached.

In addition to browsing the "In Memoriam" page on the APLB website, I sometimes visit pet cemeteries, and stroll around, reading the stones and memories. Here I get a strong sense of the passionate love and loss others have experienced. This always becomes a personal catharsis, allowing me to feel even more the mystery associated with death, graves and timeless love. And I always weep and pay personal tribute to all those dear souls - and my own beloved pet, as well. Then I leave, feeling enriched and close to my loved one, again. This book will provide others with the same experience, but in a completely different format. It recharges the reader's spiritual batteries with the love and tears and glow that come back from deep within - and that is always a precious experience.

If you have ever loved a dog, this is a must read.
I am an avid reader of science, sometimes though it can be so dry and devoid of emotion. It trys too often to explain the inexplicable. For example, a recent article in the Atlantic Monthly was titled "Why your dog pretends to love you." It explained the genetics of dog behaivor. It really missed the point though of the human/dog relationship. It is not about behaviors, it is about love. For all its attempts, love is one of those things that science just cannot adequately explain. There is no grief greater for a human than dealing with the loss of love. Also, it seems, there a few bonds of love stronger than that we have for our pets. We feel so hopeless when we lose what we love, our grief seems to have no bounds. It all seems so hopeless. What this small book does is address, in a wonderful way, that grief. People famous and unknown share their thoughts on the loss of their cannine companions. In no way though is it ever morbid or indulgent. If you have lost a cherished dog companion I highly recommend this book. It is full of what you need the most-hope.

The Black Cauldron (Laurel-Leaf Books)

Author: Lloyd Alexander

AN ANCIENT IRON MENACE STALKS PRYDAIN!
The Companions, as the author frequently calls them, are summoned by Prince Gwydion and the venerable wizard, Dallben, to undertake a perilous quest: to march into the stronghold of the evil Lord of Annuvin, to remove and destroy the black cauldron of heavy iron, which Arawn uses to spawn a vicious breed of Middle World Undead. We are pleased to meet again our old friends from THE BOOK OF THREE: Taran, the Assistant Pig Keeper, who longs to be considered a man, Princess Eilonwy with her ready tongue, the story-stretching bard with his fickle harp, and other faithful followers. Yet this book, #2 in a series of 5 Prydain Chronicles, retains its integrity when read alone.

Alas, pride and treachery are rampant in the land bordering Annuvin, whence the dark lord of evil reigns and schemes. Our hot-tempered hero must use both his wits and his heart his to gradually acquire wisdom in this difficult and dangerous odyssey. The small company of adventurers are eager to prove their valor and gain honor, yet they experience the inevitable personality conflicts. How will the companions ward off attacks by The Hunstmen and the foul Cauldron-born who do Arawn's bidding? And who can defeat the black beast that travels on Ellidyr's tattered shoulders?

Yet there is much more to this book than a mere succession of adventures, traps and twists of fate. Many serious themes bubble up between the mayhem that Alexander has set in motion. One reminded me of a later book, THE GIVER: "Give us--the nicest summer day you can remember!" Ah, but is it easy to part with something intangible like a dream or a memory which has become a part of onesself? And this black Crochan, as it is called, emanates evil and possessiveness towards those who think they own it--reminiscent of the ring in THE HOBBIT. Evil can completely dominate one's neutral or natural personality. Just how much will Taran sacrifice or allow his friends to sacrifice for him, in order to obtain and destroy the Black Cauldron?

Great! A must read book.
Taran, Eilonwy, Gurgi, and Fluddur Fflam are back in another enchanting fantasy in the land of Prydain as described in The Book of Three. The companions set out on a journey to destroy the Black Crochan,a cauldron used to make cauldron- born zombies. Packed with action, wisdom, and courage, this is an excellent read for Princesses of Llyr, bards, princes and Assistant Pig Keepers the same.

Wonderful
It was tough deciding which of the Prydain books to review, but I decided to do The Black Cauldron because it's my favorite of the bunch (and the cover of this edition is beautiful). All of these have been around for decades, but I just read them for the first time last year, as a sophomore in college, because I avoided "classics" like the plague while growing up.

The Black Cauldron is the darkest of the Prydain Chronicles, and it tells the story of Taran and his companions as they head to Arawn Death-Lord's domain to recover the Black Cochran, which creates soldiers out of the dead. The book explores the price and sacrifice that true heroism demands. The memorable cast of characters include Adaon, a unique bard, and three interchangeable witches who are reminiscent of the Three Norns, or the Fates.

A haunting and beautiful tale that I highly recommend (along with all the Prydain Chronicles).

A place where the body, the mind, and the spirit meet...
I am such a huge fan of this gifted writer. Ms. Johnson has such a rare gift. She doesn't just write words she creates worded images that are so powerful and full of life that the reader is quickly pulled into the pages of her beautiful story and held captive until after the last word has been read. She writes with such passion that it amazes me. What a prize Laurel Johnson is to be sure! (A Highly Recommended Novel!)

...
Told in impeccable prose and succinct verse, The Grass Dance is a small book (slightly over 100 pages) that tells a very big story of the author's fifteen-year odyssey of struggle to overcome depression, fugue, dissociation and mental illness. Raised in a rural midwestern setting by a loving mother, grandmother and grandfather, Ms. Johnson gives an honest account of the spiritual and moral values that formed the basis of her early understanding of her anscestory, her friends and relatives and of her own place in the world and of her relationship to the Creator. Later in adult life, the author shuns her faith,
the lessons of her youth and those closest to her. So begins her downward spiral into the depths of mental anguish. Finally, after fifteen years of struggle, the author "dreams" of her grandfather and his Indian friend ,John , conveying one more lesson for her to learn. By understanding the meaning of the Grass Dance, the author's faith in God and the lessons of her youth are restored. No matter what one's individual beliefs might be, The Grass Dance is not only a wonderful read but is an absolute inspiration as well.

There's a Lesson to be Learned Here
"The Grass Dance" by Laurel Johnson is her personal account of a 15-year period of her life when she was plagued with depression, confusion, dissociation, hallucinations, and mental anguish. Her journey during this period of time is a painful one, and Ms. Johnson has the unique ability to convey the anguish and confusion she felt so as the reader feels as if she/he is there sharing it with her. I love the story about Indian John and, even more, the one about the grass dance. When the author talks about dancing the grass dance at John's grave, I could feel myself transported to that place, see the wild grass and wildflowers moving softly in the wind, watch Laurel dance around the grave. What did I learn from this book? That God is everywhere, and even though we may distance ourselves from him, he does not distance himself from us. To look around at my world and at all the wonders before me. To know that, like the grass and the wind, life may "bend" my spirit, but will not break it, as long as I believe. Thank you, Ms. Johnson, for this great gift, "The Grass Dance".

Kate Bjorkman's biggest fan raves about a great romance
The Unlikely Romance of Kate Bjorkman is a fabulous romance story. This protagonist is so real and so lovable that you can't put the book down and when the book is over you begin to miss the characters so terribly, you have to read it again. I have never read a book where I have grown so attached to the main characters. This book is proof that perfect Christmas romances can still happen and it gives hope to a world that is cynical about love. Kate Bjorkman is a wondeful character and you really feel for her, but she has her head o straight, a fabulous family, and an enjoyable sense of humor. Everyone should be required to read this book before they fall in love.

The Unlikely Romance of Kate Bjorkman
This is a wonderful book. If possible I would give it 10 stars! I have read it over and over again. It is a teen romance novel about a likeable and realistic girl. This novel holds a certain reality to it, unlike any of the other romance novels that all seem to have the same ending. Kate is an average teenager (self-consious, and nothing close to perfect) who fell in love with her brother's best friend. He went off to college. After a year or so, Kate's older brother brings him home to spend christmas with Kate and her family. What will happen? Welp, that's for me to know and you to find out! It is a wonderful book, I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

This book was humorous, and well written
This book is a must read for anyone out there who loves a very real romance. This is not the romance with the skinny, petite, gorgeous female, and the handsome, strong, popular male. This is a very realistic novel about two unsuspecting people who happen to fall in love. The relationship between all the characters in so real, you can feel all the emotions they all feel. It's like Kate (the main character) is talking directly to you in a conversation. Once you pick up this book it is so hard to put it down. You can't tell what will happen untill you read it all the way to the last word. I definately recommend it to anyone who craves a good romance and even anyone who doesn't!

Companions of the Night (Laurel-Leaf Books)
Published in Paperback by Dell Pub Co (October, 1996)
Authors: Vivian Vande Velde and Vivian Vande Velde
Average review score:

It looks long, but read my review plz!!
This is the only book I have ever read more than once! If you've read The Silver Kiss, Shattered Mirror, or any other Vivian Vande Velde books, or vampire books for that matter, you're guaranteed to love this! There are no one, or two star ratings, and that's gotta tell you something. Many of the other reviews of this book end in people saying they want a continuation, and trust me, in the end, you'll well agree. This was the book that got me interested in vampire books, and it's so well written. The only thing I didn't like about this book was that I never could picture what Ethan really looked like, even though she descirbed it very well, and I tried countless times.
It's about a sixteen year old girl named Kerry Nowicki, who, at eleven at night, can't resist her brother's pleas for her to retrieve Footy, his stuffed koala bear, from the 24-hour laundromat he left it at earlier in the day. Kerry's father is sleeping, and her mother left their family for another man. She only has her learners permit, so she has to do this quick.
When she gets there, she finds Footy, and is just about to head out the door, when, all of a sudden, three men come in dragging a fourth, Ethan Bryne (who by the way is really, really hot, his charater is mysterious, incredibly seductive to Kerry, and he's a bad boy, so this is a good book for bad boy fans), who's gagged and bloodied. They spot her, and she has no time to escape. She learns the men believe that Ethan is a vampire, and they think she may well be one also. They allow her to help Ethan with his wounds, so as not to make a nuisance of herself, she doesn't believe anything they say, Ethan seems so helpless, and she has no reason to doubt that he's innocent of everything they're accusing him of, so, she decides to....read it to see what happens.
If you've never read this book before, ENJOY it the first time, I couldn't bring myself to give any of it away, that would ruin it, and you don't want this book ruined the first time you read it. I wish I could read it again, forgetting everything that happened, because the first time is a once in a lifetime thing.
If you don't even like vampire books, this'll change your mind. It's a combination of suspense, and romance, with murder, kidnapping, stealing, vampires, and thrill after thrill, what more can you ask for in one book? I don't think you'd be reading this if you couldn't read, but if you can GET. THIS. BOOK. AND AS I SAID BEFORE, ENJOY IT THE FIRST TIME.
You may never feel the same about any other book, I looked for some more vampire books, but none look this good!!

I Wish I Could Give It More Stars!
I've just recently gotten into vampires, and I found Companions of the Night while browsing through amazon.com. Intrigued, I read some of the reviews, and knew that I had to read this book!

It all begins when Kerry's little brother Ian asks her to go to the laundromat to get Footy, his stuffed koala bear, which he'd left there earlier that day. Kerry is reluctant to go, since it's 11:00 at night, she has a test the next day on a book she hasn't finished, and she doesn't have her driver's license yet. But she can't resist her little brother's pleas, so she goes anyway. The action starts when a group of men burst into the laundromat while Kerry is there, dragging a tied-up and bloodied young man who they believe is a vampire. Kerry, knowing there is no such thing as vampires, helps the young man escape.

But the next day when Kerry's dad doesn't pick her up from work, she's worried that it has something to do with the events of last night. But then the young man, Ethan, shows up to give her a ride home... where she discovers that her dad and brother have been kidnapped by a crazed vampire hunter. Having run out of options, Kerry asks Ethan for help in finding her family--and learns that vampires do exist, and Ethan is one of them. Can she trust him to help her rescue her family, or is he using her to get at the vampire hunter? She doesn't know who to trust, or even whether she'll live through the night.

Companions of the Night is filled to the brim with action, suspense, romance, and even a little humor. It instantly became a favorite, and I am looking forward to buying it and reading it again and again. If you like vampires, romance, and a superb hard-to-put-down story, this book is just the thing for you.

Best romance/horror/vampire book EVER
When I read The Silver Kiss (Annette Curtis Klause), I was positive that it couldn't get any better than that. I was wrong. This book definitely takes the cake in it's genre. When Kerry, an average 16-year-old, with a learner's permit and a Mom who abandoned her family, grudgingly drives to a laundromat late at night to retrieve her little brother's stuffed koala bear, she unknowingly gets involved with a world of mystery and vampires when she meets Ethan, gagged and bloddied, and suspected of being a vampire by a group of vamp hunters. Which, of course isn't a good thing for Ethan. Her beliving there are no such thing of vampires, she helps him escape, and she assumes she'll never see him again. She's wrong. When her family goes missing, Ethan is the only one who can help her find them, and Kerry is the only one who can help Ethan get the revenge he wants on the vamp hunters. Things get more complicated when Kerry realizes she's fallen in love with Ethan, and... oh yeah, he really IS a vampire. The characters are well developed, and the plot has tons of twists. The many facades and uncertainties that surround Ethan will keep you guessing throughout the whole book. if you like vampires and romance, buy. This. Book. Now. I cried at the end, probably due a combination of the way the book touched me so deeply, and the fact that there is no sequel yet. Because, not to give away the ending, but it is wide open for a sequel. Unfortunately, it was written in 95', and we're still waiting ....but I haven't lost hope! Good luck trying not to read it in one sitting ;-).

Webbed hands and strange looking eyes
The Transall Saga, by Gary Paulsen is a great book. It has a great plot, and well developed characters. This is an excellent book for anyone that likes science fiction or adventure stories. The story begins in the desert, where a young boy named Mark goes on a hiking trip. Then out of nowhere comes a big bright blue light that transports him to an unknown place. To Mark it all seems like a different planet. Everything has changed including the anatomy of people, plants, and animals. People have webbed hands and feet with strange looking eyes, trees and grass are red, and animals are like creatures from a horror movie. The story is a non-stop roller coaster ride with thrills, chills, and spills. However I think that the ending was lacking. The conclusion was too abrupt and left too many lose ends...I advise any readers to stop at page 243, because the ending is so dissapointing, you would be better of making up your own.

The Transall Saga
The Transall Saga by Gary Paulson is a great book that anyone should read. This book is full of thrilling adventure and mind compeling events. This book is about a "city boy" named Mark that convinces his parents to let him go camping by himself in the desert. While camping he discovers a strange blue light. He fell through it and found himself in a strange world with many alterations. There are different animals and plants. Colors of things are different too. some how he has to survive in this world, as he is learning he is also growing in many ways. Read this book to find out how he survives in this wilderness. This is an awesome book in my point of view.

The Transall Saga
The Transall Saga

I would say this is an action adventure book. I say this because Mark travels all over Transall, and while traveling he meets up with different primitive tribes. He has different exciting adventures with each tribe.

People who like adventure or action stories would love to read this book because of all the exiting things that happen to Mark on his search through Transall to find the blue light that warped him into the distant future. I think this book should be read by ages seven and up and mostly read by boys.

My two favorite events of literature are setting and theme. The setting of this book is a mixture of the forest and the mountains. The theme of the book is what it's like to live in a place you don't know anything about.

I would rate this book like this: five stars on a 1-5 star scale.

Blood and Chocolate (Laurel-Leaf Books)
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Laureleaf (07 September, 1999)
Author: Annette Curtis Klause
Average review score:

Great book for supernatural YA fans
I really loved this book, it's sexy, funny, complicated, and well developed. Very artfully and beautifully written. I'd say it's Klause's best book yet, although I was more into The Silver Kiss, because I'm more of a vamp fan.

It's about a werewolf named Vivian who travels with her pack and savors the sweet night when she becomes wolf. She falls in love with a human, Aiden. A chain of murders spreading throughout the small West Virginian town, supposedly caused by animals, makes her fear for her pack's safety, and Aiden's after she realizes that she might be the cause. Although she is a werewolf, I was surprised by how much I could relate with her struggle of never really fitting in. She's seems so human, that's what great about this novel.

A great teen novel in general, I just give it four stars because werewolves aren't my bag. But it's such a great read, I highly reccomend it!

Silky, sensuous, and sexy
"Blood and Chocolate" is Annette Curtis Klause's third novel (following "The Silver Kiss" and "Alien Secrets"). Here, her writing darkens, yet we can't help but love every lightening-paced second of it.

Vivian Gandillon is a vivacious teen werewolf who doesn't know her place anymore. Stricken by her father's recent demise, and feeling half-responsible, she feels separated from her mother and other packmates and finds refuge in her artwork. Then she meets Aiden, a modern hippie poet who's intrigued by her raw and tenacious spirit. Vivian is torn between this human boy (who knows nothing of her true nature) and her pack (who hates humans altogether). A few late-night drinking binges cause Vivian some major black-outs, followed by gruesome murders. Vivian can't remember anything; is she a killer? With humans closing in all around and her beloved Aiden in the proverbial dark about her secret, Vivian is at a complete loss. Is she a sexy young woman or a violent werewolf?

Klause's descriptions are smooth and flawless with all subplots neatly stitched together. Particularly wonderful is Vivian's slow descent into madness and the way she tells off the people who get in her face. Everyone can understand Vivian being unable to connect with her mother and being courted by a persistant (and annoying) guy. The fact that Vivie can take this on by herself makes me want a sequel. I can't wait for the movie!

Strange name - fantastic book
I read this book because a friend suggested it, and since then I have read it twice. This book is incredible. The main character Vivian will make you think what it is like to be a teenager - even if you aren't a werewolf. This book is unusual in that Vivian can control her being a werewolf except during the full moon. The only other book that I have read about werewolves that has this is "Blood Trail" by Tanya Huff. Vivian's "pack" has moved to the suburbs after their farm was burnt down and their leader (Vivians father) died. In the suburbs there are constant fights for leadership, and Vivians mother must deal with the threat from a younger female. All that conflict is made worse when Vivian starts seeing a "meat boy". Vivian must decide whether or not to reveal her true nature to her new love - and she must also deal with the advances of the Five.

Vivian was a character that became like an old friend. You completely enter her world of scornful teenagers and pack-rules of her family. Gabriel makes you love him and hate him in turn as he becomes Vivians hunter and protector. At times I was frustrated with this book because it seems as if the author was keeping a secret from you - only to have the story engulf you.

I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone with a taste for the unusual. If you enjoy this book then you should also try "Blood Trail" - which has a vampire as well as werewolves.

Arden is a very creative and smart individual. Her brother Scott has been raising her since their parents were in a plane crash. Scott and Arden's relationship is just like any other brother and sister's but not only is Scott a brother to her, but he's a father figure too. I recall one time when he tried to explain her name, "Arden can't you wait. I mean didn't you want to know why mom chose to call you Arden?" Everything seems to be going well with Scott. He's got a girlfriend who he seems to be happy with, and he has his snowmobile. But he hasn't convinced Arden that he is happy with his life. One morning Arden wakes up for school and notices that her brother hasn't came home. A day later she gets worried because her brother still hasn't shown up. She calls her brother's friend,Al Walker, who is also a policeman. He calls for a search and a few days later they find Scott's snowmobile by a creek just a few miles away from their house. Arden couldn't believe it, no he couldn't be dead. Everybody assumes that Scott is dead, except for one person... Arden. She spends the next few months searching for her brother. The big question is... Did Scott really die or did he just fake his death? Read the book to find out! I believe that young teens will enjoy this book because the charaters are very real to me. The relationships between the characters are easy to relate to.

Captivating!
This book was really good. I read it on recommendation of a friend, and all I could do after I started was read. I liked it a lot. After I finished I just kept going back and reading over some of the best parts, over and over. It was really good!

The story is about a teenager named Arden who lives with her brother. Both of her parents died when she was young, so he takes care of her. One day he gets in a snow machineing accident, which really scares him. A week later when his snow machine, and other things are found in the river, she knows he is dead. Or is he? No one beleives her, thinking it's brought on by depression, as she starts to search for her missing brother. This book was captivating, a story like no other. I would DEFINATELY recommend it.

It was a very touching story
The book was about a girl named Arden who was raised by her older brother,Scott. When she was 17 her brother had a snowmobile accident, but Arden believes that he staged it. It basically tells how Arden searches to find her brother and how she realizes how important the little things in life are.I really enjoyed reading this book, it taught me a lot about life, love, and families. I learned how important family can be and how you should never take the things that you have for granted because they wil not always be there. I think that everyone should read the book Thin Ice. It had a very realistic plot and a basic story line that is easy to learn a lesson from.
